Average 5K time

The honest answer for first-timers: a range, not a number. Here's what's typical, and how to work out your own.

What's typical

Most first-time 5K finishers take between 30 and 40 minutes, and plenty of run-walkers finish in 40–50 minutes. At a weekly parkrun you will see finishers from under 20 minutes to well over 50, including walkers.

For a first 5K the only goal that really matters is finishing feeling strong. If you want a number, “under 35 minutes” is a common, achievable target after eight weeks of training from scratch.

Typical ranges here are based on published race-result analyses such as Running USA's annual reports and results from mass-participation events. They vary a lot by event, course and field.

Predictions assume you've trained for the longer distance. For a first half marathon, add 5–10% to be safe.

Getting faster (later)

For your first 5K, consistency beats cleverness: three or four easy runs a week, a gradually longer long run, and a few strides. Most beginners improve by minutes over their first year from that alone. Start with the 5K training plan.

Questions first-timers ask

What is a good 5K time for a beginner?

For a first 5K the only goal that really matters is finishing feeling strong. If you want a number, “under 35 minutes” is a common, achievable target after eight weeks of training from scratch.

What is the average 5K time?

Most first-time 5K finishers take between 30 and 40 minutes, and plenty of run-walkers finish in 40–50 minutes. At a weekly parkrun you will see finishers from under 20 minutes to well over 50, including walkers.

How can I estimate my own 5K time?

Run a recent shorter race or time trial and put it into the race time predictor on this page, or divide your goal time by 5 to get the pace per kilometre you'd need.

Does age or gender change what counts as a good 5K time?

Yes. Race results show average times rise gradually with age and differ between men and women, which is why many races publish age-group results and “age-graded” percentages. For a first race, compare yourself only with your training.
