Questions first-timers ask
What should I bring to my first race?
Your bib and safety pins, shoes and clothes you have trained in, anti-chafe balm, a throwaway layer if cold, water, a snack and warm clothes for afterwards, and your phone and payment card.
What should I eat before a race?
A light, familiar, carbohydrate-based breakfast 2–3 hours before the start, such as toast with jam, porridge or a bagel with banana. For a 5K a small snack is enough; for a half marathon eat a proper breakfast you have tested on long runs.
How early should I arrive for a race?
Aim for 45–60 minutes before the start for a small local race, and more for big-city events with bag drop and security. Toilet queues are always longer than you expect.
Where do I pin my race bib?
On the front of your top, flat and visible, using all four corners. Timing chips are usually built into the bib, so don’t fold or cover it.
