Enough time to train?
How to choose your first race
- Pick a date that gives you enough weeks (use the checker above), plus a couple of spare weeks for life getting in the way.
- Flat and local beats scenic and far. Less travel means less stress, and you can recce the course on a training run.
- Check the cut-off time. Most 5Ks and parkruns have none; some half marathons close after 3–3.5 hours. Make sure your expected time fits comfortably.
- Look at the vibe. “Fun run”, “charity 5K” and parkrun all signal a welcoming, mixed-ability field.
- Book it. A paid entry and a date on the calendar are powerful motivation on rainy Tuesday evenings.
Once you've booked, head to the plan builder, enter your race date, and your plan counts back from race day. Closer to the day, use the race day checklist.
Questions first-timers ask
How do I find 5K races near me?
Search a race calendar such as RunSignup or Running in the USA (US), Find a Race (UK) or Ahotu (worldwide) by distance and location, or look for a free weekly parkrun near you.
What is parkrun?
A free, weekly, timed 5K held on Saturday mornings in parks in more than 20 countries. You register once, print your barcode and turn up. Walkers are welcome, and there is a volunteer tail walker so nobody finishes last.
How far ahead should I book my first race?
Far enough to train properly: about 8 weeks for a 5K from scratch, 8–12 for a 10K and 12–16 for a half marathon. Popular half marathons can sell out months ahead.
Is a big race or a small race better for a first-timer?
Both work. Small local races are relaxed and cheap; big-city races have crowds and atmosphere but also more logistics. For a first 5K, a parkrun or local fun run is hard to beat.
